The first international flight departed from Gelephu today, marking an important milestone in strengthening regional connectivity and expanding travel options to and from Bhutan. For now, Drukair will operate two flights per week to Kolkata, with plans to connect additional cities in the near future.
With its strategic location in southern Bhutan, Gelephu serves as a convenient gateway that complements the existing airport in Paro. This development reflects Bhutan’s continued efforts to enhance accessibility while supporting tourism, trade, and socio-economic growth.
Unlike Paro Airport, which is restricted to daytime operations due to surrounding mountains, Gelephu can accommodate night flights thanks to its vast and flat runway.
For visitors entering Bhutan, Gelephu provides easy access to the lush subtropical landscapes of Zhemgang. The nearby Royal Manas National Park is renowned for its rich biodiversity. After exploring this region, travelers can depart directly from Gelephu without needing to return to Paro.
Gelephu is also home to the upcoming Gelephu Mindfulness City, a visionary development that blends Bhutanese values of spirituality and harmony with nature with innovation, technology, and economic vibrancy.
The Festival is a religious event held in the tenth day of the Bhutanese lunar calendar.
