Spring brings almost perfect weather and this is undoubtedly the best time to travel to Bhutan. Clouds hanging low in the air might sometimes affect the visibility of the Himalayas but this will be compensated by the superb wildflowers. The wonderful rhododendrons, wild azaleas, and edelweiss cover the meadows like carpet. The famous Paro Festival also takes place during this time.
Although the weather is quite warm and mountain valleys turn green and alpine flowers bloom in profusion, monsoon rains put an end to most treks. Unlike other regions, western Bhutan does not experience constant rainfall but short downpours usually in the afternoons or late evening, and sightseeing tours in western Bhutan (Paro, Thimphu, Haa and Punakha) can still be done.
This is in many ways the absolute best time for trekking and travelling. With the monsoon just over, the countryside is green and lush, the air is crystal clear and the Himalayan views are at best. Moreover, the weather is still comfortably warm. Autumn is when farmlands glow in golden yellow with ripening of paddies, a great time for photography. The Thimphu Festival and Jambay Lhakhang Drup Festival draw many travelers at this time of the year.
The days are full of sunshine with visibility still good while evenings can turn chilly. Much of the treks remain snowbound during winter but main valleys where visitors generally travel are considerably warmer. Winter offers an opportunity to see the endangered black-necked cranes in the beautiful valley of Phobjikha that migrate from the Tibetan plateau. If you like to avoid the higher tariff and travel crowd free, then this is the best time for you.
Most travelers to Bhutan arrive by air at Paro, Bhutan’s only international airport.
